Short bio: At a young age I began creating visual art and learning music. Less than year after my birth on November 6th, 1989 in Ukiah California, I moved to the Ojai Valley. At times since then I have lived in San Diego and Los Angeles counties, graduating from California Institute of the Arts in 2011 with a BFA in Art. In tandem with visual art I create and perform music in the duo music project Caduceus. I currently live in Ojai with two lop-eared rabbits, two frogs, one tortoise, and a variety of native and exotic flora.
Extended bio: It was only a few years after my birth into the physical world (occurring on November 6th, 1989 at 10:37 am in the redwood forests of Ukiah, California) that I began creating art. At nine months old I relocated to the oak forests of the Ojai Valley, California. I got started as a percussionist banging on pots and pans before I could walk or talk, soon after (upon achieving verticality and basic language) taking percussion lessons with Ojai’s drum circle leader Sartuse. At age six I began attending the Art Workshop, run by Ojai artist Sharon Butler, where I was able to develop my own artistic aspirations: drawings and paintings of animals and environments, real and imagined. After a year of studying piano at age nine, I returned to percussion, playing snare drum in the elementary school band, followed by private lessons on the drum set. Growing up, writing was a mode of expression I kept to mostly myself. Visual art, music, and writing constitute my triad of artistic communication.
My predominant residence in Ojai (from the Chumash word “awhay” meaning “moon”) has been punctuated by lifetimes in San Diego and Los Angeles counties and frequent expeditions to the Eastern Sierras. From 2007 to 2011 I attended California Institute of the Arts, where I continued my artistic endeavors in painting and drawing (sometimes to the confusion of peers and professors) and evolving my work into installation and mixed media. My instinctive fascination with the visual aspects of the world fueled my utilization of photography as a medium of rapture. I eventually brought my literary explorations out of secrecy into written and spoken poetry and prose. After receiving my BFA in Art from CalArts, I resided in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, returning to Ojai in 2014. From 2014 to 2016 I was percussionist and multi-instrumentalist in the Ojai power trio band The Post Nothing, which released their live recorded self-titled album in 2016. Today, in tandem with my solo visual and literary work, I play percussion, bass guitar, keyboards, and contributing vocals in the duo music project Caduceus with guitarist and vocalist Daniel Masiel. I manage www.artistsofearth.net, a website featuring the works of under-represented artists of Ojai. In 2017 I joined the Ojai Studio Artists. I coexist mutually with two lop-eared rabbits, (Yettie and Sassquatch), two frogs, (Gaspeite and Jasper), one Russian tortoise (Vladimira), and a variety of native and exotic flora.
